Welcome to our May roundup! If you’ve been here before, you may remember my fresh picks of the week — this post is a refreshed version of it. I hope you like it! Thank you for reading.

Where do I even start? May was a big month. One of my good friends flew in from the Philippines and we finally got to explore Sydney and Newcastle together like we’ve always dreamed of. I laugh at our conversations prior to the trip — how many of you get overexcited and plan a hundred activities for a three day weekend? *raises hand* It was such a perfect weekend and I can’t wait to have her again. It’s just so special when good friends from home come to visit.

Newcastle has a good amount of coastal walks so we wanted to take advantage of that. We squeezed in a half-walk along Bathers Way (the legs gave up halfway, but the views made up for it), ate our way through the city, and had so many laugh-until-you-snort moments I wish I bottled them up.

I also spent my birthday weekend in Sydney — stayed at a beautiful hotel, wandered the streets with my husband and toddler, and found a few new places I can’t wait to share with you.

Here’s everything I wrote, loved, and recommend from May — the recipes, the restaurants, and the small joys worth passing on.

This month on the blog:

In case you missed them, here are the new posts from May on Fresh Saturdays — each one has a little story, a lot of food, and hopefully something that makes your week better.

🍕 Quick & Easy Homemade Pizza for Busy Weeknights – Faster Than Takeout

Perfect for those nights when you want something delicious and fast. The store bought crust is the real winner here. Think: crispy crust, bubbling cheese, and minimal effort. This one’s great if you’re searching for easy dinner recipes with store-bought pizza dough.

🌅 Sukimama: The Korean Street Food Pop-up in Merewether Locals Are Raving About

A sunset view, handmade dumplings, and some of the best Korean street food and Korean food (in general) in Newcastle. They’ve since wrapped up their pop-up, but Suki says big things are coming! I’m thinking ready-to-eat products!!

🏙️ MuMu Sydney Review: Bold South-East Asian Eats & Cocktails in the Heart of the City

I think this may be one of the best places to eat in Sydney. We went here for my birthday lunch and it did not disappoint. Colourful, fun, and absolutely perfect for your next Sydney food weekend.

🍜 Hokkaiya Japanese Restaurant: Cozy Hidden Gem in Hamilton, Newcastle

Quietly excellent — one of those Newcastle Japanese restaurants that flies under the radar but deserves a visit.

💐 A Real Mother’s Day in Newcastle: My Bucket List of Simple Joys

No Pinterest-perfect moments here, just a real day filled with the most yummy mother’s day brunch, coffee, a walk, time with my daughter, and the kind of slow happiness I don’t want to distract myself from.

Best 2025 TV shows.. so far!

When I have some down time, the best thing I love doing is watching an amazing series. This year is jampacked with some really great ones, so timeblock your calendar cos these shows are a must watch. If you’re in need of something new to watch (preferably while eating that homemade pizza), here are a few series that had me hooked:

1. Overcompensating – a show by beloved internet icon Benito Skinner, it’s about a closeted former football player who struggles to navigate life in college. It’s hilarious and poignant at the same time. I’ve already watched it two times  — it’s that good.

2. Sirens – Featuring Meghann Fayh and Milly Alcock of White Lotus and House of Dragon fame, respectively — this show is about the complex dynamics of sisters heavily intertwined with their problematic past, and what lengths they’re willing to go for respite.

3. Dept Q – Matthew Goode does it again. Dept Q is british crime drama about a brooding detective that is assigned to lead a cold case unit. Tension is high, story is amazing, and acting is insane.

Another thing I loved this month..

image c/o Mermade Hair

This mermade hair waver is my go to for a simple hair routine for busy mornings on the weekend. I also think it’s the best hair waver for beachy waves, especially if you have short or medium length hair like I do. I rarely ever curl my hair and when I do, I need it to be fast and simple — this does the trick! I loved my hair with a bit of wave and crimp.
