Fresh seafood in Maitland
I was first introduced to Salt Chilli and Lime in East Maitland by two friends who insisted I try this hidden gem tucked away on the streets of Maitland. At first glance, it might seem modest, but it delivers a truly exceptional dining experience. I’d been craving a good lunch or brunch, and since it was the first week of 2025, I assumed many places wouldn’t be open. Then I remembered Salt Chilli and Lime—it had been on my mind ever since my friends raved about it. Known for serving fresh seafood in Maitland, it was the perfect choice. I couldn’t wait to check it out!

The restaurant’s facade is unassuming—so understated that you could easily miss it while driving by. Among the restaurants in Maitland, it’s one of the more low-key and subtle options. Their round signage and simple yet elegant exterior blend seamlessly into the street, with no flashy lights or bold colors demanding attention. Blink, and it’s gone. The entrance, tucked between other shops, features a plain door and a discreet sign. From a customer’s perspective, making the exterior a bit more eye-catching could be a small but impactful improvement. After a few minutes of searching, we managed to snag a parking spot right out front (score!) and headed inside.
Stepping in, the space opens up beautifully, with a medium-sized bar directly in front of you and an open kitchen layout to the left. The vibe was cozy and intimate, but the clever open design made it feel larger than it actually was—a stroke of design genius. The front seating area featured high tables and chairs that could accommodate two to four people at most. Despite the quiet time of year, I was surprised to see every table reserved.
A friendly woman, whom I assumed to be the owner, greeted us warmly and guided us to our table at the back. To my surprise, there was another seating area beyond the main dining space—an unexpected and pleasant discovery, given how compact the front of the restaurant appeared. It added to the charm, making the place feel like a hidden treasure waiting to be explored.
Hidden gem of a restaurant in the heart of Maitland
Let's talk food 🍲
Salt Chili and Lime food menu
Since it was just the two of us, we ordered two mains and one appetizer:
Fritto Misto – $28
A lightly floured and flash-fried mix of baby octopus, school prawns, and baby calamari, served with lemon and tartare sauce. This was the standout dish for me! Absolutely delicious. The light flash-frying kept it from being too oily, making it wonderfully moreish.
Slipper Lobster Roll – $28
A battered and fried slipper lobster with shredded lettuce, topped with a dill, tarragon, and chive mayo, all nestled in a soft brioche roll and served with hand-cut chips. While this dish was tasty enough to finish, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me—I prefer a fresh take on lobster rolls. Still, the flavors were well-balanced and satisfying.
Beer-Battered Fish – $20
Golden-battered barramundi served with hand-cut chips, lemon, and tartare sauce. Their version of the classic fish and chips didn’t reinvent the wheel, but it was undeniably fresh and delicious. The batter was perfectly crunchy, delivering a satisfying bite.
Seafood misto
Fried lobster roll
Fish and chips
There are still so many items on the menu I’m eager to try! The crispy fried prawns, their famous soft-shell crab, roasted garlic and prawn oil bread, and a selection of cold seafood, like fresh tiger prawns and Sydney rock oysters, are all calling my name.
If we’d had more time, this small but impressive restaurant in East Maitland would have been the perfect spot to enjoy a few cocktails. Their extensive drinks menu boasts a variety of cocktails alongside a great wine and beer selection—ideal for rounding out a memorable dining experience.
