We don’t usually go to Bondi. When we come down from Newcastle, it always feels like a little treat as it’s the kind of place that instantly puts you in weekend mode. Maybe it’s being near the ocean again, or how everyone moves at a slower, sunnier pace. I like visiting Bondi because it feels both new and familiar all at once. We always joke that it’s like a bigger, more touristy Newy – maybe that’s why it feels a bit like home.
On this trip, we were after something easy and satisfying after a long morning walk with one of my best friends from Manila, who was visiting us. We were craving bagels, so naturally, we searched for bagels near Bondi Beach – and luck was on our side. That’s how we ended up at Lox in a Box Bondi, a small, deli-style spot that ticked all the boxes for us.
From the moment we arrived, that familiar smell of toasted bagels filled the air – warm, buttery, and just a little sweet. It was raining that day so we were lucky to get a table immediately considering we arrived at peak time. The space itself is tiny but full of charm, with cheerful blue tiles, deli-style counter vibes, and bagel boxes stacked neatly behind the register. Locals pop in and out for their morning fix, while a few people linger on the (roofed) bench out front with coffee in hand, soaking up the Bondi breeze.
What We Ate at Lox in a Box Bondi
Lox in a Box menu: See here
The best way to order is order to share! We had a bit of classic, a bit of something new. Everything came out perfectly packed, still warm, and smelling amazing.
Classic Lox ($19)
A proper favourite. Silky smoked salmon layered with herby cream cheese, red onion, tomato, and baby capers. It’s simple but so well done! it was salty, creamy, tangy, and the kind of combo that never gets old.
Reuben ($20)
Piled high with pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing. Messy in the best way, each bite hits that balance of savoury and sharp.
Chicken Katsu Bagel ($20)
Crispy chicken with a bit of crunch, pickled cucumbers for freshness, and a drizzle of miso mayo to tie it all together. It’s indulgent but not heavy.
Shmear Bagel with Cream Cheese ($10)
Sometimes the simplest option is the most satisfying. Just a plain bagel with a thick spread of cream cheese – soft, chewy, and perfect with coffee.
If you’re chasing bagels in Bondi Beach that taste like comfort food with a modern twist, this is where you should go.
Our go-to Sydney bagel spot
Bondi has no shortage of breakfast spots, but Lox in a Box stands out for how effortlessly good it is. It’s simple, it’s satisfying, and it’s the kind of food that lifts your mood without even trying. Carbs and cheese?! Yes please.
For us, the Classic Lox brought back that familiar feeling – a mix of nostalgia and pure comfort, but with the sunshine and sea breeze that only Bondi can offer.
If you haven’t tried Lox in a Box Bondi yet, make it part of your next Sydney weekend. And if you have – tell me your favourite bagel order! I already know we’ll be back soon.
