I’ve noticed since moving here that Newcastle loves Thai food - it’s probably the most ubiquitous Asian cuisine in the city. Scenes from: Taronga Zoo, Mosman, Sydney 📸 I’ve lived here for five years after moving from the Philippines, and l’ve only just witnessed how big and spectacular Taronga Zoo is. I’m a girl from a pretty dense city with limited greenspaces, so it was quite striking to see just how vast this zoo is. And the view?? Ohkaaaay 🙂‍↔️🫰🏻 Our daughter is at the perfect age where she’s in awe of the animals and understands what’s going on around her, so visiting was a joy. It’s such a privilege to be able to photograph these animals - but also felt quite sad that they’re not where they’re really meant to be. That said, we definitely don’t take it for granted. If you decide to visit, make sure to wear appropriate shoes, bring snacks, and come early! The crowd gets insane and parking is impossible when it’s later in the morning. A core memory for us for sure - pretty cool we have access to experiences like this one! Neighbourhood notes: Scenes from Talulah Cafe at t Neighbourhood notes: Scenes from Talulah Cafe at the Junction 📸 What I love about Maitland and Newcastle is how naturally community seems to happen here. Nothing is forced. It just shows up. At least from my perspective. And often over a coffee. Cafes and restaurants feel like the unofficial town squares - places where prams are parked alongside bikes; where dogs wait patiently outside, and you almost always spot someone you vaguely know but can’t quite place (former coworker? friend of a friend? Pilates mum?). We often go to the Junction during weekends because it has a relaxed aura to it. One of the staple cafes there is Talulah cafe. Talulah feels lived-in, in the best way. People linger. The food is great but the vibe is even better. No one looks rushed and everyone seems to be connected in some way. It’s pretty amazing when a place stitches itself into your routine until one day you realise it’s part of how you experience the neighbourhood. That’s honestly my favourite kind of cafe.
