Walking into Antojitos Newcastle is an experience in itself. You arrive hungry and the space immediately sets the tone for what’s to come. The industrial-style fit-out and open floor plan feel airy yet vibrant, like you’ve stepped into a buzzing hub where good food and good times collide. Then, your eyes catch the vintage van parked inside, a charming nod to old-school California that you only see in movies. It’s unexpected but somehow feels right at home here. The vibe is effortlessly laidback: It’s equal parts warehouse chic and casual taqueria, and it has this way of making you even more eager to sit down and eat.
Tip: Walk ins are very welcome but if you have a big party, best to book online.

Located in Newcastle West, Antojitos has long held a reputation as the go-to spot for Mexican food in the city. I would even dare to say this might be the best Mexican restaurant in Newcastle. Whether you’re a local looking for a midweek burrito fix or visiting the Hunter region for the weekend and searching for the best casual eats or Mexican food in Newcastle, this place tends to pop up in every recommendation – and for good reason.
The menu is distinctly and intentionally short, and it works. Each item feels carefully considered – like it’s been perfected over countless batches in the kitchen rather than thrown on the board to tick a box.
The kitchen is completely open, giving you a front-row seat to the action. It’s hypnotic watching the people move in unison—pressing dough, cooking the meat, making the vibrant salsas, as if all part of a choreographed dance.
Did I mentioned it’s kid friendly too? While waiting, you’re free to grab one (or two) colouring materials provided for by the staff. It’s a small touch that makes a big difference in hospitality; after all, kids pay for their meals too (well, we do, but you get what I’m saying haha). And it’s truly enough to get my toddler (and other children, through observation) busy while we all patiently wait for our food.

And while you wait, don’t skip their aguas frescas. These refreshing drinks are made in-house daily, brimming with fresh fruit and perfect for cutting through the richness of your meal.
The combination of the pared-back menu, the open kitchen, the delicious food, fresh drinks, and the raw energy of the space all help reflect Antojitos Newcastle’s mission so well, which is to give people easy, accessible, and fresh Mexican street food. A celebration of California-Mexican culture through food, done simply and done well.

What We Ate at Antojitos Newcastle

The tacos and burritos here aren’t just good – they’re freaking delicious, point blank. As I bit into the burrito, I literally paused for a bit and said out loud how fresh and amazing it was! Every element feels layered and intentional, from the warmth of the corn tortillas to the creamy guac to the brightness of the salsas. Across the board, the soft tortillas were fresh and had the perfect texture and bite to it. The ingredients were fresh, layered, and bursting with flavour. Here’s what we ordered.
3 x Baja Fish Tacos – $18
Soft corn tortillas filled with battered fish, salsas, avocado sauce, pico de gallo, cilantro, cabbage, and mayo. Light and crunchy, with a creamy zing that my husband and I fought over for (I won).
3 x Pollo Asado Tacos – $18
Grilled chicken with the same fresh toppings minus the mayo and cabbage. These were punchy and smoky with just enough citrus to cut through the richness.
Suadero (Beef) Burrito – $18.05
Stuffed generously with rice, cheese, beans, salsas, pico de gallo, guacamole, and crema. The beef was so tender and shredded, and the spice marinade was perfectly balanced, with the perfect amount of smokey flavor. Hearty and flavourful – my husband LOVED this.
Baja Fish Burrito – $18.90
Battered cod, rice, cabbage, pico de gallo, salsas, guac, and mayo. All the best parts of the fish taco, in a burrito that holds together beautifully until the last bite.
Pollo Asado Burrito – $17.90
A well-balanced mix of grilled chicken, rice, cheese, beans, salsas, pico de gallo, guacamole, and crema. If you want something comforting but not too heavy, this is it. The chicken had that perfectly delicate balanced grilled flavour to it. This is my personal favourite!
Kids Cheese Mulita – $7.50
A toasted, cheesy tortilla sandwich that our little one loved. Simple, satisfying, and just the right size for little hands.

Should you eat here?
Absolutely, and I wouldnt be surprised if it becomes a weekly routine. Antojitos doesn’t try to be everything to everyone – and that’s exactly why it stands out. The focus is clear: fresh, bold, uncomplicated Mexican street food that tastes like it was made with care. Whether you’re dropping in for a quick taco lunch or settling in for a full burrito feast, the experience delivers.
Great news: There’s another Antojitos in town – Antojitos Mayfield is now open! details below.
