There are some places in Newcastle that just feel like they belong to everyone, and Blackbutt Reserve is one of them. On any given weekend, you’ll see families setting up picnics, groups of friends gathering around the BBQs, and kids darting through the grass with that kind of wild energy only wide-open spaces can bring. What’s nice about Blackbutt is that it manages to feel both self-contained and expansive at the same time. You can spend the whole day here without needing to leave, but it never feels crowded or claustrophobic.

One of the first things we noticed on our visit was the new café at the entrance. A small but much-welcomed addition, especially for anyone arriving with kids in tow who need snacks before the adventure begins. It’s a convenience we appreciated – no digging around for extra food in the picnic basket when you can grab a coffee or a quick bite on site. The service could have been better and the food was fine (not outstanding, but it did the job). Still, the fact that it’s there makes a huge difference in making the reserve more visitor-friendly.

The playground is another highlight: a large, well-equipped area just across from the entrance to the animal sanctuaries. For families, it’s basically a guaranteed stop. My toddler would have happily stayed there the whole day if we let her. There’s plenty of room to climb, slide, and explore, and it’s designed in a way that feels safe but still exciting for kids of different ages. Nearby, there’s also a more private section you can hire for birthdays or BBQs. It’s tucked away just enough to give the feel of your own little corner of the reserve, which is such a good option if you’re celebrating something special outdoors.

And then, of course, there are the animals. This is the part that makes Blackbutt Reserve so beautiful. Animals wandering about is just an amazing thing to see. I feel so grateful to live in a place where there is expansive nature. We strolled through the sanctuary areas and spotted kangaroos lounging in the sun, emus strutting about, and a very sleepy koala that still managed to draw “awws” from everyone who passed. The snakes were a hit too (though more for curiosity than cuddles), and the bird enclosures were alive with sound and colour – parrots, cockatoos, and so many more. For my toddler, it was magic. She ran from one enclosure to the next, eyes wide, pointing and naming animals, and I loved watching her soak it all in.

Blackbutt Reserve Newcastle is the perfect experience for little kids

That’s what I think Blackbutt gets so right – it’s both educational and fun. Kids (and adults) learn about native wildlife, but it doesn’t feel like “learning” in the classroom sense. It’s just part of the experience of being there, part of a day spent outside together. By the time we left, we felt like we’d had more than just an outing – it was a mix of play, exploration, and connection with nature. Blackbutt Reserve is definitely more than just a place to see animals, it’s a place that reminds you how good it feels to slow down, spend time outside, and enjoy a day together.

Thinking of your next weekend outing? Pack a picnic, pop on some comfy shoes, and head to Blackbutt Reserve – it’s one of Newcastle’s best spots for families.
