Includes the best free activities in Newy!

Every week, one question that gets thrown around almost like clockwork is: “What shall we do this weekend?” Ever since moving here, I’ve been on a mission to find the best ways to keep both myself and my almost-three-year-old entertained. Lucky for us – and for you – Greater Newcastle is a goldmine when you have a toddler in tow — plenty of open spaces, beaches, parks, and little adventures that keep them entertained (and hopefully wear them out enough for a solid nap). If you’re looking for things to do in Newcastle with kids, you’re in the right place. Here’s my go-to list of Newcastle toddler-friendly activities, tested and approved by a very energetic nearly-three-year-old.

The best things to do in Newcastle with a toddler for a fun-filled day

1. Newcastle Museum - free, fun, and full of distractions and interactive activities

The Newcastle Museum is an absolute lifesaver when I need something engaging but low-effort. We’ve already gone three times in the past three months because they had a dinosaur exhibit on. Spoiler: My daughter loves dinos. It’s free (bless), has interactive exhibits, and enough space for my toddler to run wild without knocking over anything too valuable. The Supernova science center is a hit, with buttons to press and levers to pull—basically, toddler heaven. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (seven days a week during school holidays). A solid option for a rainy or too-hot day when you’re wondering what to do in Newcastle with kids.

2. Nobbys Beach - toddler-approved beach

Nobbys, in my opinion, is the best beach for a toddler and my daughter loves it. There are plenty of great beaches in Newcastle, but Nobbys is our top pick. The waves are usually gentle, there’s a long stretch of sand for digging and running, and it’s mostly patrolled year-round and safe. Plus, there’s a kiosk for emergency snacks (very important). Bonus: There’s a nice walk up to Nobbys Lighthouse if your little one is up for it. If you’re exploring Newcastle with kids, this has been a nice activity for us to do. Highly recommend!

3. King Edward park

Newcastle is packed with parks, but King Edward Park is one of our faves. There’s loads of space to run around, picnic spots, and the bonus of ocean views. It’s a great place to bring a ball, a picnic rug, and just let them do their thing. Plus, if you’re feeling ambitious, you can wander down to the Bogey Hole (but fair warning: it’s a bit of a mission with a toddler).

4. Maitland park

Maitland City is a fast-growing regional city just 30 minutes from town. If you’re up for a short trip, Maitland Park has one of the best all-abilities playgrounds in the area. It’s massive, well-designed, and toddler-friendly. There’s also a little scooter track and plenty of shade, which is crucial in summer. We make a whole morning out of it and stop for a coffee and lunch on the way back.

5. Honeysuckle play area - waterside playtime

Honeysuckle is beautiful! Went I first saw it, I just felt so much gratitude for being here. The foreshore has a little play area that’s great for toddlers, plus a walking path along the water that’s perfect for scooting. We usually bring snacks and sit by the water watching the boats. Definitely one of the our best family activities to do Newcastle that other families should check out.

6. Weekend markets

Newcastle markets

Markets are a weekend staple for us. It’s my muse and inspo for this blog! Newcastle is rooted in community, so there are so many local markets to check out. Whether it’s Olive Tree Market, Newcastle City Farmers Market, or a smaller pop-up, they’re a great way to let my toddler explore, sample some snacks, and dance to live music (or, more accurately, do that wild arm-flailing thing that toddlers call dancing). Another great pick for Newcastle things to do with kids.

7. Taking the boat to Stockton

For just a couple of dollars, you can take the ferry from Queens Wharf to Stockton—a guaranteed hit with toddlers. It’s a short ride, just long enough to feel like an adventure, and when you get there, you can wander along the beach or visit the little playground nearby. Ours loved this huge play tower, and it’s so close to the ferry so no need to rush to time your ride. A must-try if you’re exploring Newcastle with kids.

8. Riding the scooter along the foreshore

If your toddler is at the scooter stage, Newcastle’s foreshore is the perfect place to let them loose. The paths are smooth, the views are lovely, and there are plenty of spots to stop for a break (or a snack, because snacks are the key to everything). It’s a great option for things to do in Newcastle with kids. Just make sure to slather your sunscreen no matter the time of day.

9. Looking at animals at Blackbutt Reserve

Blackbutt Reserve is one of those places I never get sick of. It has a great play are, plenty of picnic spots, and best of all—koalas, kangaroos, and birds to check out. It’s free (though a small donation helps support it), and there are plenty of walking tracks if you feel like extending the adventure. If you’re looking for family activities Newcastle NSW, this one should be on your list.

10. Going to the shops

Some days, I just need an easy win. Newcastle’s shopping centres (like Greenhills, Charlestown Square or Westfield Kotara) have parents’ rooms, play areas, and most importantly —lots of good coffee spots. We do a quick lap, grab a snack, and let my toddler burn some energy in the soft play zones before heading home. Definitely one of those Newcastle toddler-friendly options that always work.

That’s our regular rotation of Newcastle things to do with kids. Some days we go big with an adventure, and other days, it’s a quick beach run and a babycino. Either way, Newcastle has plenty to offer for keeping little ones entertained (and parents somewhat sane).

What are your go-to places for family activities Newcastle? I might just add your suggestions to my growing list! Let me know—I’m always on the hunt for new spots!
